The Blue Mountains is situated on the Eastern side of the island and engulfs more than one parish; Portland being one of them, this mountain has a peak of 7,204 feet above see level. For all the adventure travelers who would enjoy some hiking, camping and cycling; while taking in the rich surroundings with lush tropical plants, the Blue Mountain area is the place to visit for a challenging trip.

The things that you require most for hiking at Blue Mountains includes wearing comfortable clothing and shoes for walking, plenty water, snacks, flashlight, warm jumper, poncho or lightweight raincoat, sun hat, camera and sunscreen. You can also take you cell phones and try not to hike alone as the necessary precautions.
The route to the Blue Mountain Peak will begins at Whitfield Hall the next section which would be the challenging and steeper part of this route is called Jacobs Ladder. Very soon after leaving this section you will reach the area called Portland Gap, this would be about two miles from where you start and there are facilities if you need to make a rest stop.
The remainder of the hike would become less steep and you will notice that the temperature cools as you get nearer to the peak; before reaching the peak you will reach another section of called the Elfin Woodland. The next stop you will have the top of the top of the Blue Mountain Peak.
The experience that you get from hiking trail will depend on the time of day that you begin; most persons prefer to start out from very early in morning and use lights to see the path. This early start will ensure that you reach the Blue Mountain Peak before the sun rises and when you get to see that sunrise and how glorious it looks it will really give you a good reason to push on. It is important to note here that you are not always guaranteed sunrise as the weather might be cloudy.
But if you do not want to hike this early you can always head out during the day and you also get to enjoy the picturesque scenery as the way to the top will having you stopping frequently to appreciate the lovely views.
It is said that when you reach the Blue Mountain Peak you get to view most of the island and if you are lucky, you will catch a peek at Cuba. The best time to hike on the Blue Mountain is from December to April when it is the dry season.
There is a section on the Blue Mountain trail called the Holywell National where you get to enjoy five different trails and it provides the best scenery for your hike; here also get to watch the many different species of birds that are indigenous to Jamaica.
Another highlight of the trip is stopping the Newcastle; this is where the Jamaica Defense Force (JDF) has their training camp and if you are lucky you will catch the troop drilling.
The experience that you will get on The Blue Mountain would be well worth your time, remember to plan carefully and take the necessary precautions before you head out on this adventure.
